Part of my clients are senior citizens over the age of 70. I have always been in awe of the storage of information in their heads and have a huge amount of respect for the length of time they have spent alive.
A particular experience happened very recently to me. My mother-in-law unfortunately had to go into a home last month. She is 94 and had been mostly independent until the year that Covid hit. We have done everything we can to keep her happy in her house, but the brain needs triggers and input to keep flexible and working properly. This day was a visit where we hoped that she would be a bit more used to the idea of this massive change. All seemed to go so well that I boldly suggested to get her into some warm clothing and go for a walk outside, not really preparing myself for the experience of having to help her to get dressed. 94, practically blind, a brain that doesn’t want to work anymore, but I was in awe how she still knew how to fasten her stockings and put on her shoes, whilst carefully checking if the door was shut so she could lean against it. Her skin all wrinkly, but not caring about that anymore. The only feeling I could feel was pride and thankfulness of being in her presence…..
