I walked into a client’s house one day and I smelled gas...

I asked the client if she could smell it and she could not. We did not take any chances and asked the emergency gas number what to do. They sent someone over and he had trouble finding a leak, but did advise to get the boiler people in. They found not one, but two leaks!!!

Be aware that your elderly family member does lose the sense of smell with age and even more so when cognitive impairment (e.g. dementia) is at play.
